P.E.

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR P.E.

All students, kindergarten through fifth grade, participate in physical education.

The Physical Essentials Curriculum is the first component of a comprehensive K-12 Physical Education Curriculum designed to give children the knowledge and skills to be physically active and lead healthy lives.  It is designed for the development of the physical, social and affective skills through developmentally appropriate practices and activities.

The Physical Essentials curriculum uses movement themes based on the fundamental skills used throughout life.  It emphasizes cooperation, socialization and active lifetime fitness rather than competitive traditional sports.

The movement themes are:
·
Orientation (Class rules, student expectations, class management
·
       Locomotor/Body & Space Awareness
·
       Ball Handling
·
       Striking/Kicking/Volleying
·
       Rhythms
·
       Manipulatives
·
       Tumbling
·
       Fitness
·
       Integrative Activity
·
       Special Events

This curriculum provides elementary children the opportunity of learning to move, moving to learn, and experiencing the joy of movement.  Physical fitness is also included in the curriculum for all grade levels. The first through fifth grade students are assessed on 4 areas of physical fitness within the school year. These areas include cardiovascular strength (1mile walk/run or pacer), abdominal strength (modified curl-up), flexibility of the lower back and legs (back saver sit and reach), and upper body strength (pull-ups or flex arm hang).

APPROPRIATE DRESS FOR P.E.

Students should wear clothing that allows for a wide range of movement. Dress for physical education also includes the required tennis/athletic shoes. These are defined as regular laced/Velcro-strap or no lace athletic shoes that provide proper support, cushioning, and traction for safety. Platform, slip on, no back, and high heel tennis shoes are unsafe and not acceptable for Physical Education. The shoe should always be laced properly because the safety of the student is very important. Girls should wear slacks, shorts, or tights under their dresses.
