Library Media Center

Welcome to your school's library!  We are currently in the final stages of automating our library collection and our checkout procedures.  We know this coming year holds many changes and, for this reason, specific policies and procedures are not included.  As the year unfolds, we know we will face many opportunities and the need for cooperation and flexibility will be great.  We look forward to working with you and your child(ren).

The mission of the Custer Hill Library Media Center is to support the school's mission by providing services to students, parents, and staff and promoting literacy skills in an integrated environment.  The Library Media Center serves two purposes.  We are a library in that we check out books and magazines to students and parents in addition to supplying the teachers with many types of materials to help them with classroom instruction.  We also serve as a classroom where lessons developed by the classroom teacher and Library Media Specialist are taught to your child(ren).

Each classroom comes to the library within the first week of school for orientation.  During this time,  BookCare and CheckOut Procedures are introduced.  Your child may keep the books and/or magazines they choose for one week.  All students practice the Lifelong Guideline of Trustworthiness by returning books and magazines before checking out more items.  While we do not charge overdue fees, we do check closely for late items.  An item is considered late one full week after it is due.   Children who frequently return books late will need to visit with the librarian and make special check-out arrangements.  We also visit about basic Computer Care at this time.

Students are encouraged to use the Lifeskill of Responsibility in caring for their books and/or magazines.  Replacing books is expensive and ties up funds for new books.  If a new book is damaged or lost, you will be charged the total cost of replacement.  If an older book is damaged or lost, the charge is determined by the librarian.  We refund payments received for lost books if the books are found at a later time.  We work with classroom teachers and parents to make special arrangements for children who have repeated difficulty finding a safe place for books in their homes.

Since the library is a classroom, it is important we work with the students in using the Lifelong Guidelines and Lifeskills.  We follow building procedures and have special procedures in place for the library.  We also have a curriculum we teach the children each year.  It is our job to instruct the students in skills concerning the use of a library, literary appreciation, and reference and study skills.  We would be delighted to share more about this - just stop by for a visit.

We enjoy meeting you, talking over the phone, communicating through e-mail, and/or having you spend some time visiting with us.  Children and parents are both welcome!  Thank you.
